The second generation of the Land Cruiser, introduced 1955 with more civilian-friendly styling than the military BJ it replaced, longer leaf springs adapted from the Toyota Light Truck, and a more powerful 3.9 L Type F six making 135 PS (133 hp). Built in Japan 1955-1960. From 1958, Toyota do Brasil began building the same 20 Series at São Bernardo under the "Bandeirante" name, continuing it there until 1968 with its own engine options — a 3.4 L Type B six and, from 1962, a Mercedes-Benz OM324 diesel four — neither of which the page states a power figure for, so only the original F-engine trim is filed here.

For the FJ40's 60th anniversary, Toyota built a one-off Heritage Edition of this Land Cruiser — just 1,200 units, US-only, and stripped to five seats instead of the usual third row.

The 100 Series was the first Land Cruiser ever offered with a V8 — and Toyota built it specifically to chase North American buyers, who got nothing else.

Toyota calls this the first true Land Cruiser station wagon, the car that invented the SUV body style for the line.

The 40 Series Land Cruiser used fold-down jump seats instead of a rear bench — a deliberate choice to out-cargo its rival, the Jeep CJ.
