FactThis Avanza ditched rear-wheel drive for front-wheel drive and grew substantially longer and wider - yet somehow came out of the redesign about 45kg lighter than before.
The third-generation Avanza (W100/W150) was launched on 10 November 2021 with development led by Daihatsu chief engineer Eiji Fujibayashi, dropping the previous generations' semi-unibody rear-wheel-drive layout for the front-wheel-drive Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA-B) on a full unibody, because infrastructure quality in Indonesia had improved and to gain efficiency, performance and comfort. It is 205 mm longer and 70 mm wider with a wheelbase 95 mm longer (108.3 in) and 160 mm more interior length, a turning radius of only 4.9 m and a claimed 45 kg weight saving; Indonesian production is split between Daihatsu's Sunter plant (Avanza and Xenia) and Toyota's Karawang plant (Avanza and Veloz), with CKD assembly in Vietnam and the Malaysian Veloz built since 2022 on the Perodua Alza line. The 1.3-litre 1NR-VE and 1.5-litre 2NR-VE engines were upgraded, and a 1.5-litre 2NR-VEX hybrid with a 0.7 kWh lithium-ion battery and an eCVT (110 hp combined) was added; transmissions are a five-speed manual or a CVT with a seven-speed manual mode. The Avanza Veloz, Daihatsu Xenia and Perodua Alza share the platform.

Toyota actually shed weight redesigning this Avanza -- about 20kg lighter than its predecessor, part of a push for better fuel economy despite growing in size.

The first Avanza was built on a split personality chassis - body-on-frame at the front, unibody at the rear - just so it could keep rear-wheel drive and carry heavy loads like a proper truck-based MPV.

The Touran quietly introduced a first for Volkswagen: electro-mechanical power steering, a segment first that varied steering weight with road speed and saved fuel by drawing no power at idle.

Romania's own president bought the first B-Max off the Craiova line, on 25 June 2012, before anyone else could.

Opel's first Zafira OPC put a 192 PS turbo four into a seven-seat minivan in 2001.

Opel's in-house tuning division built this Zafira a 240-hp turbocharged heart — turning a seven-seat family minivan into one of the quickest people-movers of its era.

Porsche co-developed this Zafira's clever fold-into-the-floor seven-seat system, marketed as Flex 7.

Vauxhall killed the Zafira Tourer in Britain because buyers had moved on to SUVs.

This Touran generation had a firm end date: Wolfsburg stopped production in April 2026, exactly 11 years after it started.
