FactThe Touran quietly introduced a first for Volkswagen: electro-mechanical power steering, a segment first that varied steering weight with road speed and saved fuel by drawing no power at idle.
Designed by Erwin Leo Himmel on the Volkswagen Group A5 (PQ35) platform shared with the Golf Mk5 and Mk6, Golf Plus and Caddy Mk3, and produced from December 2002 at Wolfsburg (and Anting in China from 2004, and Jakarta), as a compact five- or seven-seat MPV filling the gap between the Golf and the larger Sharan (its name a portmanteau of "Tour" and "Sharan"). It was sold in Japan as the Golf Touran, and a crossover-styled version as the CrossTouran. Engines ranged from the 1.6 R4 and the 1.6 and 2.0 FSI to the 1.2 and 1.4 TSI (the 1.4 TSI in 140, 150 EcoFuel and 170 PS forms), CNG EcoFuel versions and the 1.6, 1.9 and 2.0 TDI diesels, with five- and six-speed manuals, a six-speed Tiptronic or a six- or seven-speed DSG. A 2010 update added a common-rail 2.0 TDI, and Volkswagen showed the Touran Hy Motion hydrogen study. A modified Touran appears in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006).
