FactThe first Avanza was built on a split personality chassis - body-on-frame at the front, unibody at the rear - just so it could keep rear-wheel drive and carry heavy loads like a proper truck-based MPV.
The Toyota Avanza (with its Daihatsu Xenia twin, and from 2022 the Veloz) was conceived by Toyota, Daihatsu and their Indonesian subsidiaries in the wake of the 1997 Asian financial crisis, when the price of the best-selling Kijang had skyrocketed: feasibility studies began in 1999 for a vehicle more affordable than the Kijang, and Toyota handed development and manufacturing to Astra Daihatsu Motor for its low-cost expertise, with US$90 million invested (the "U-IMV", Under-IMV, project, a reference to the Innova above it). The first two generations used a semi-unibody chassis (a body-on-frame front half and a monocoque rear half) that kept the rear-wheel-drive layout and the ability to carry heavier loads, but reportedly gave unstable high-speed ride and unrefined NVH. The F600 was launched in December 2003 (assembled at Daihatsu's Sunter, Jakarta plant, at Toyota's Karawang plant from 2008 to 2011 under contract, and by Perodua in Malaysia) with the 1.3-litre K3-DE (84 hp) and K3-VE VVT-i (88, later 91 hp) and, from 2006, the 1.5-litre 3SZ-VE (107 hp); it also formed the basis of the FAW Senya/Sirius in China and South Africa.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

This Avanza ditched rear-wheel drive for front-wheel drive and grew substantially longer and wider - yet somehow came out of the redesign about 45kg lighter than before.

Toyota actually shed weight redesigning this Avanza -- about 20kg lighter than its predecessor, part of a push for better fuel economy despite growing in size.

The first Avanza was built on a split personality chassis - body-on-frame at the front, unibody at the rear - just so it could keep rear-wheel drive and carry heavy loads like a proper truck-based MPV.
