The second-generation Avanza (F650) was launched on 9 November 2011 in Indonesia with development led by Toyota chief engineer Kaoru Hosokawa (four years of development and Rp 900 billion invested), on the same platform as the original: about 20 kg lighter, with low-rolling-resistance tyres, enhanced air-conditioner regulation and electric power steering for a substantial fuel-efficiency gain, a 25 mm wider track and wider wheels, revised MacPherson-strut front and four-link rear suspension, thinner seatbacks for more second- and third-row knee room and a boot 18 mm deeper. A 2015 facelift brought the 1.3-litre 1NR-VE and 1.5-litre 2NR-VE Dual VVT-i engines (the K3-VE and 3SZ-VE continuing from the first generation until then), with a 2019 facelift and the Avanza Veloz and Luxury versions; Toyota also sold a fleet-only Transmover from 2016 to 2023. Production of the Avanza and Transmover ran until July 2023, and it was replaced in South Africa by the Toyota Rumion.

This Avanza ditched rear-wheel drive for front-wheel drive and grew substantially longer and wider - yet somehow came out of the redesign about 45kg lighter than before.

Toyota actually shed weight redesigning this Avanza -- about 20kg lighter than its predecessor, part of a push for better fuel economy despite growing in size.

The first Avanza was built on a split personality chassis - body-on-frame at the front, unibody at the rear - just so it could keep rear-wheel drive and carry heavy loads like a proper truck-based MPV.
