FactToyota kept the same wheelbase but little else: its own engineers put the AN140 Innova's parts carryover from the old model at just 5 percent — "a few bolts and screws."
The second-generation Innova (AN140), launched in November 2015 in Indonesia after the Hilux and Fortuner of the same IMV family, was developed under executive chief engineer Hiroki Nakajima as a "crossover MPV" — 150 mm longer, 55 mm wider, 35 mm taller and 210–290 kg heavier than its predecessor and sharing only about 5% of its components — on the same 2,750 mm wheelbase and a revised body-on-frame chassis with thicker side rails, double-wishbone front and four-link rear suspension. The 2.0 and 2.7-litre petrols carried over from the previous model with slight modifications, while the 2.4-litre 2GD-FTV and 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV turbo diesels were new and Toyota claimed a 30 percent fuel-efficiency improvement for them. In India it was launched in May 2016 as the Innova Crysta with a 2.8-litre diesel exclusive to it and a 2.4-litre diesel; it is built in Indonesia and India and assembled in Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam (the Vietnamese Innova was discontinued in September 2025). Electronic stability control became standard after the model earned 4 stars (3 airbags) or 5 stars (5 airbags with ESC) under 2016 ASEAN NCAP and 5 stars in 2020.
