FactThis Sharan grew longer, wider and lower than the van it replaced — and somehow still came out 30kg lighter.
The second-generation Sharan, based on the Volkswagen Passat (B7) (Volkswagen Group A6 / PQ46 platform, shared with the Tiguan Mk1, Škoda Superb B6 and SEAT Alhambra Mk2), was launched at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show with sales from September 2010. It inherits only its name from the previous model, is 220 mm longer, 92 mm wider and 12 mm lower on a wheelbase lengthened by 75 mm, 30 kg lighter, and has sliding rear doors instead of hinged ones. The initial engines were a 1.4 TSI (150 PS) and a 2.0 TSI (200 PS) petrol and two 2.0 TDI diesels of 140 and 170 PS, with a six-speed manual, five-speed Tiptronic or six-speed DSG. A facelifted car was unveiled at the 2015 Geneva show. Volkswagen ceased production for China in March 2020 in favour of the Viloran; the car was dropped in the UK in 2021 and production in Portugal ended in October 2022 with no replacement planned, as buyers moved to crossovers and SUVs.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

This minivan started as a corporate secret: VW and Ford developed it jointly from 1987 in a project known only to each company's top executives — and the winning design that became the Sharan was actually Ford's.

The Touran quietly introduced a first for Volkswagen: electro-mechanical power steering, a segment first that varied steering weight with road speed and saved fuel by drawing no power at idle.

Romania's own president bought the first B-Max off the Craiova line, on 25 June 2012, before anyone else could.

Opel's first Zafira OPC put a 192 PS turbo four into a seven-seat minivan in 2001.

Opel's in-house tuning division built this Zafira a 240-hp turbocharged heart — turning a seven-seat family minivan into one of the quickest people-movers of its era.

Porsche co-developed this Zafira's clever fold-into-the-floor seven-seat system, marketed as Flex 7.

Vauxhall killed the Zafira Tourer in Britain because buyers had moved on to SUVs.

A fire in one Zafira wrecked up to 300 cars in a single Stavanger Airport parking garage in January 2020.

This Touran generation had a firm end date: Wolfsburg stopped production in April 2026, exactly 11 years after it started.
