FactThis minivan started as a corporate secret: VW and Ford developed it jointly from 1987 in a project known only to each company's top executives — and the winning design that became the Sharan was actually Ford's.
A seven-seat minivan shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1995 and built at the AutoEuropa plant in Palmela, Portugal, as a joint project with Ford (the Ford Galaxy, in most respects identical) and SEAT (the Alhambra), on the Volkswagen Group B-VX62 platform, designed by Greg M Greeson (1990). Ford independently introduced a new Galaxy in 2006 (the last first-generation Galaxy left the line at the end of 2005), while the Sharan and Alhambra continued until August 2010. A cosmetic facelift at the September 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show for the 2004 model year changed the grille and round tail lights and added air conditioning and curtain airbags. Engines were the 1.8 turbo and 2.0 petrols, the 2.8 VR6, and 1.9 and 2.0 TDI diesels, with a 4motion all-wheel-drive option on the 1.9 TDI 90 PS, five- and six-speed manuals or a five-speed Tiptronic. A BlueMotion arrived in 2008 with 159 g/km CO2, and PrinceGas and Volkswagen launched a petrol/LPG 2.0 in June 2006.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

This Sharan grew longer, wider and lower than the van it replaced — and somehow still came out 30kg lighter.

This minivan started as a corporate secret: VW and Ford developed it jointly from 1987 in a project known only to each company's top executives — and the winning design that became the Sharan was actually Ford's.

The Touran quietly introduced a first for Volkswagen: electro-mechanical power steering, a segment first that varied steering weight with road speed and saved fuel by drawing no power at idle.

Romania's own president bought the first B-Max off the Craiova line, on 25 June 2012, before anyone else could.

Opel's first Zafira OPC put a 192 PS turbo four into a seven-seat minivan in 2001.

Opel's in-house tuning division built this Zafira a 240-hp turbocharged heart — turning a seven-seat family minivan into one of the quickest people-movers of its era.

Porsche co-developed this Zafira's clever fold-into-the-floor seven-seat system, marketed as Flex 7.

Vauxhall killed the Zafira Tourer in Britain because buyers had moved on to SUVs.

A fire in one Zafira wrecked up to 300 cars in a single Stavanger Airport parking garage in January 2020.

This Touran generation had a firm end date: Wolfsburg stopped production in April 2026, exactly 11 years after it started.
