FactThailand got a secret pocket-rocket Vios: a turbocharged 143 PS XP40 variant with a bonnet scoop, of which only about 600 units were ever built.
The first-generation Vios (XP40) was previewed as the Toyota T-1 prototype at Auto China in Beijing in June 2002 (drag coefficient 0.29) and went into production in October 2002 at Tianjin FAW Toyota, and at Toyota's Gateway Plant in Chachoengsao, Thailand as a cooperative project between Thai engineers and Toyota's Japanese designers. Slotted below the Corolla as the subcompact sedan for Southeast Asia, China and Taiwan, it replaced the Tercel (Soluna) and was adapted from the Platz on the NBC platform, with modified body panels and cues from the E120 Corolla and a centre-mounted instrument panel. The 1.5-litre 1NZ-FE VVT-i was fitted in Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia and Taiwan; the Philippines (from June 2003) had that and the 1.3-litre 2NZ-FE, and China (2004–2008) the 1.3 8A-FE and 1.5 5A-FE, replaced in 2006 by the 2SZ-FE and 3SZ-VE, with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. Trim levels ran J, E, G and S in Southeast Asia and DLX, GL, GLX and GLXi in China; a minor facelift arrived in September 2005, Indonesian taxi versions were rebadged the Limo, and Taiwan built it until early 2014. It was campaigned in touring car and one-make racing in Indonesia and Thailand. The Thailand-only Vios Turbo is catalogued as its own generation.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

For the first time, the Vios wasn't designed in-house by Toyota — this generation was engineered entirely by Daihatsu, through a joint venture called the Emerging-market Compact Car Company.

The Vios topped Vietnam's sales charts every single year from 2014 through 2020 — a run no rival could break.

Only 600 Vios Turbos were ever built, and Toyota gave this budget sedan the transmission and differential gearing straight out of the MR-S sports car.

Nissan hired former BMW engineers to help develop the 510's suspension, which is why period reviewers frequently compared its handling to the BMW 1600/2002.

A Trabant 601 won its class at the 1970 Monte Carlo Rally, with a second 601 right behind it in second.

The 600 was a stopgap: the P50's body over the 601's mechanicals, and for a while its estate was built alongside the new 601 saloon.

The G80 Sport brought a 370 PS twin-turbo 3.3 V6, a mesh grille and copper-tinted chrome with copper stitching to match.

The Vigor was sold only with a five-cylinder engine, an unusual configuration Honda used to fit a longer engine transversely under a short hood.
