FactThe Vios topped Vietnam's sales charts every single year from 2014 through 2020 — a run no rival could break.
The third-generation Vios (XP150) for the Asian market was unveiled on 25 March 2013 at the 34th Bangkok International Motor Show, its design previewed by the Dear Qin sedan concept shown at Auto China in April 2012, and Toyota aimed to make it a global model: it was sold as the Yaris sedan in Latin America, the Middle East, Pakistan and India and on the new EFC platform, with an enlarged front and rear and an instrument cluster no longer in the centre of the dash. The 2017 facelift brought newer sheet metal, an interior redesign and the Yaris hatchback's front styling on a platform revised with additional welds for rigidity (Toyota estimated an 11 percent NVH improvement and 40 percent more dashboard sound insulation), and in Thailand it was marketed with the 1.2-litre as the Yaris Ativ to qualify for the Eco Car incentive while the 1.5-litre Vios continued alongside until 2022. Engines are the 1.3-litre 2NZ-FE and 1NR-FE and the 1.5-litre 1NZ-FE and 2NR-FE (from 2016) with a 5-speed manual, 4-speed automatic or, from 2016, a 7-speed CVT; production ran 2013–2023 in China, Malaysia and Thailand, 2018–2021 in India, 2013–2022 in Indonesia, 2020–present in Pakistan and continues in the Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan. It was not offered in the US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand (where Mazda2-based Yaris sedans replaced the older ones from 2015 to 2020).

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

For the first time, the Vios wasn't designed in-house by Toyota — this generation was engineered entirely by Daihatsu, through a joint venture called the Emerging-market Compact Car Company.

The Vios topped Vietnam's sales charts every single year from 2014 through 2020 — a run no rival could break.

Only 600 Vios Turbos were ever built, and Toyota gave this budget sedan the transmission and differential gearing straight out of the MR-S sports car.

Thailand got a secret pocket-rocket Vios: a turbocharged 143 PS XP40 variant with a bonnet scoop, of which only about 600 units were ever built.

It briefly served as senior sibling to Marquette, a GM companion brand cancelled after just one year.

Nissan hired former BMW engineers to help develop the 510's suspension, which is why period reviewers frequently compared its handling to the BMW 1600/2002.

A Trabant 601 won its class at the 1970 Monte Carlo Rally, with a second 601 right behind it in second.

The 600 was a stopgap: the P50's body over the 601's mechanicals, and for a while its estate was built alongside the new 601 saloon.

The G80 Sport brought a 370 PS twin-turbo 3.3 V6, a mesh grille and copper-tinted chrome with copper stitching to match.

The Vigor was sold only with a five-cylinder engine, an unusual configuration Honda used to fit a longer engine transversely under a short hood.

The GS/E coupe earned the nickname "German Charger" for its long hood, short deck stance borrowed from Detroit muscle cars.

This DeVille/Fleetwood was the first production car anywhere to mount its V8 sideways, Cadillac's front-drive gamble on the new C-body.
