FactSuzuki detuned its own Jimny for the home market: Japan's 1976 Jimny 55 made less power than the LJ50 it had already been exporting since 1975, cut to fit new kei-car rules and emissions standards.
The 539 cc three-cylinder LJ50 two-stroke arrived in September 1975 for export only with 33 PS at 5,500 rpm and, for Japan, in June 1976 as the Jimny 55, reflecting changed kei rules and stricter emissions: power fell to 26 PS but low-end torque rose. The 635 kg vehicle could reach 60 mph, and the spare tyre moved outside the rear door, allowing a fourth seat. In most export markets it was the LJ50 (LJ55 once the LJ80 arrived), and from May 1976 a low-production LJ51P long-wheelbase pickup was offered. The home-market Jimny 550 got a facelift in 1977 with rear wheel-arch flares and a bigger hood with cooling slots, while export LJ50s were replaced by the four-stroke LJ80. In Australia the LJ50S and LJ50V were sold with 33 hp and 42.3 lb-ft. The LJ50 became the first Suzuki automobile assembled in New Zealand from late 1976, at four cars a day.

We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

A special version of the original Jimny put the spare tire behind the passenger seat, which freed up room for two tiny rear seats that faced each other.

The LJ10's body panels were designed to fit within Japan's kei-car tax dimension limits so precisely that Suzuki had to reshape the original HopeStar body rather than simply carry it over.
