FactFiat moved the driver over the front axle to kill the boot, and the trick still fit six people in a footprint barely bigger than a Mini.
The Fiat 600 Multipla was a four-door MPV based on the Fiat 600's drivetrain and Fiat 1100 front suspension, seating up to six people in a footprint just 50 cm longer than the original Mini Cooper and on the same 2 m wheelbase as the 600 saloon. This was achieved by moving the driver's compartment forward over the front axle, effectively eliminating the boot and giving the body a very minivan-like one-box, flat-front look. It debuted at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1956 and was discontinued in the spring of 1967, replaced by the Fiat 850 Familiare; about 240,000 were built from 1956 to 1967, and the Multipla name was reintroduced in late 1998 for the Fiat Multipla compact minivan. It was offered as a 4/5-seater with two rows of seats and cargo space behind the rear bench, a 6-seater with three rows of seats, and a taxi version launched at the April 1956 Turin Motor Show, widely used as a taxi in Italy until the 1970s. It used the 600's type 100 rear-mounted overhead-valve four-cylinder with a shorter final drive ratio, the 600's rear trailing-arm suspension and front double-wishbone suspension with coil springs, coaxial dampers and an anti-roll bar sourced from the 1100/103; the fuel tank moved to the rear above the gearbox and the spare wheel rode inside the cabin. In September 1960 it received the same mechanical upgrades as the 600 D saloon, including the enlarged 767 cc engine, becoming the 600 D Multipla. The Motor tested a 633 cc RHD Multipla in 1956 at 57.1 mph and 0–50 mph in 43.0 seconds.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

The Multipla's Blupower variant skipped the usual compromise entirely — no backup petrol tank at all, just four CNG cylinders good for about 420 miles, making it the first production car to run on natural gas alone.

Opel's first Zafira OPC put a 192 PS turbo four into a seven-seat minivan in 2001.
