The third-generation Cresta was introduced on 8 March 1988 as a sedan only, styled to look like a four-door Soarer, with double-wishbone suspension front and rear and every engine now DOHC. Engines included a supercharged 2.0-litre 1G-GZE, a 2.0 twin-turbo, the Soarer's 3.0-litre 7M-GE in the top Super Lucent G, which was wide enough to leave Japan's compact class, and from the August 1990 refresh the 2.5-litre 1JZ-GE and 1JZ-GTE twin-turbo. A 2.4 diesel and turbodiesel were also offered. The Aristo replaced it as the flagship of Toyota Vista Store in 1991.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Toyota sold the Cresta exclusively through its Toyota Vista Store dealer network, one of five separate sales channels the company ran in Japan at the time.

The Super Lucent G offered a 6-inch screen showing TV and the car's GPS position, plus a phone handset built into the front armrest.

The supercharged 1G-GZE six had an electromagnetic clutch, so the blower only turned when it was needed, to save fuel.

The X70 Cresta moved its mirrors off the front fenders onto the doors, Western style, and folded them electrically for tight parking spaces.

The top Cresta was the Super Lucent, a name Toyota derived from the Latin lucens, to shine.

It briefly served as senior sibling to Marquette, a GM companion brand cancelled after just one year.

Nissan hired former BMW engineers to help develop the 510's suspension, which is why period reviewers frequently compared its handling to the BMW 1600/2002.

A Trabant 601 won its class at the 1970 Monte Carlo Rally, with a second 601 right behind it in second.

The 600 was a stopgap: the P50's body over the 601's mechanicals, and for a while its estate was built alongside the new 601 saloon.

The G80 Sport brought a 370 PS twin-turbo 3.3 V6, a mesh grille and copper-tinted chrome with copper stitching to match.

The Vigor was sold only with a five-cylinder engine, an unusual configuration Honda used to fit a longer engine transversely under a short hood.

The GS/E coupe earned the nickname "German Charger" for its long hood, short deck stance borrowed from Detroit muscle cars.

This DeVille/Fleetwood was the first production car anywhere to mount its V8 sideways, Cadillac's front-drive gamble on the new C-body.
