The second Toledo (Typ 1M) debuted as a four-door notchback saloon at the 1998 Paris Motor Show, with sales from October 1998 and the UK from March 1999. It was rounder and more fluid than the first, still by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign with input from SEAT's exterior design chief Steve Lewis, on the Volkswagen Group A4 (PQ34) platform of the Golf Mk4, Bora and Škoda Octavia (positioned as the sportiest of the three), with the first Audi A3's dashboard, and a 500-litre boot expandable to 830 litres. Early cars were built in Belgium, and the SEAT León Mk1 followed as a proper hatchback. The base engine was a crossflow 1.6 of 100 PS, then a 125 PS 1.8 20-valve, topped by the 2.3-litre VR5 with 150 PS (170 PS with a 20-valve head from 2001) and a 180 PS 1.8 turbo late in the run. The 1.9 TDI came in 90 and 110 PS forms, later 130 and 150 PS with six-speed manuals. The Toledo Cupra Mk2 raced in the ETCC (2003), WTCC (2005–2006) and BTCC.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

The last Toledo wasn't really a SEAT build — it shared its platform with the Škoda Rapid and came off the same Škoda line in Mladá Boleslav.

The hatchback-less Mk3 Toledo still paid tribute to its roots — its Renault Vel Satis-inspired rear was a deliberate nod to the original Toledo's hatchback/saloon tail.

A Chinese automaker built its own version of the first SEAT Toledo after acquiring a chassis from, of all places, a Mexican dealership — with SEAT's blessing.

A Trabant 601 won its class at the 1970 Monte Carlo Rally, with a second 601 right behind it in second.

The 600 was a stopgap: the P50's body over the 601's mechanicals, and for a while its estate was built alongside the new 601 saloon.

The G80 Sport brought a 370 PS twin-turbo 3.3 V6, a mesh grille and copper-tinted chrome with copper stitching to match.
