FactThe A 45 AMG squeezed as much power per litre out of its tiny four-cylinder as a Bugatti Chiron does from its quad-turbo W16 — a hot hatch matching hypercar efficiency.
W176 is the internal designation for the third-generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class, a range of 5-door hatchbacks produced by Daimler AG from July 2012 to May 2018 at Rastatt (and from August 2013 also at Valmet in Uusikaupunki, Finland), introduced at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show and officially a subcompact executive / C-segment model for the first time after fifteen years as a supermini / B-segment car. It has no 3-door version, is the second vehicle on the front-wheel-drive MFA platform (after the W246 B-Class, before the C117 CLA; the Infiniti Q30 and QX30 also use it), and the A-Class is available only in petrol and diesel. It was 4,292–4,367 mm (169.0–171.9 in) long on a 2,699 mm (106.3 in) wheelbase, 1,780 mm (70.1 in) wide, with a drag coefficient of 0.26 (down from 0.31), MacPherson strut front and four-link rear suspension, 341 litres of boot space (1,157 litres with the seats down) and, for the first time, optional full-LED lamps; the A 250 4MATIC all-wheel-drive version came from 2013. By July 2012 it had 40,000 pre-orders in Europe and by mid-November 90,000 orders. All W176 units are straight-four petrol or diesel engines (the 1.5-litre diesels supplied by a Renault unit), with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed 7G-DCT dual-clutch automatic. The facelifted W176 was revealed on 27 June 2015 with production starting in September 2015, with updated lights, adaptive damping and Dynamic Select mode, and diesel models losing the CDI plate for a "d" suffix (B 220 CDI became B 220d). It was replaced by the W177 in 2018. The page's engine table lists the A 220 4MATIC as 180 PS with 184 hp, which do not agree with each other, so no power is entered for it; the A 45 AMG is catalogued as its own generation.

The fourth-generation A-Class, sold in the U.S. starting with the 2019 model year, marked Mercedes-Benz's return of the A-Class nameplate to the American market after it had never been officially sold there before.

Mercedes squeezed so much out of the A45 AMG's little turbo four that, per litre, it matched the specific output of a Bugatti Chiron's W16.
