FactMercedes built 500 electric versions of this A-Class using powertrain components made by Tesla.
The second-generation A-Class (W169), in production from June 2004 to 2012 at Rastatt and Samut Prakan, was offered as a 3-door and 5-door hatchback. It used high-strength steel alloys with bonded joints, standard front airbags (adaptive, with two-stage gas generators) and combined head and thorax-protection side airbags, and a cargo capacity increased by 15 percent over the W168. Seven four-cylinder engines were available: four petrol (A 150, A 170, A 200, A 200 Turbo) and three diesel (A 160 CDI, A 180 CDI, A 200 CDI), partnered with a five- or six-speed manual gearbox and an optional "Autotronic" continuously variable transmission; the diesels used a newly developed direct-injection common-rail system, with a particulate filter available as an option, and all met EU4 emissions limits. The front-wheel-drive car had traction control (ASR), electronic stability control and ABS as standard, a Parabolic Rear Axle and a standard "Selective Damping System". The most powerful engine reached 0–100 km/h in 8.0 seconds with a top speed of 218 km/h (135 mph). The 2008 update (five-door hatchback and three-door coupé debuting in spring 2008) brought redesigned front and rear fascias and lights, optional stop-start on the A 150 and 170 and Active Park Assist; a 5,500-unit Special Edition followed in 2009, and in September 2010 the A-Class E-CELL electric version (500 built for trials, 70 kW peak output, 200 km range, 36 kWh battery with Tesla-built powertrain components) was introduced. Wheelbase is 2,568 mm (101.1 in), length 3,838 mm (151.1 in) (3,883 mm from 2008), width 1,764 mm (69.4 in) and height 1,593 mm (62.7 in). The page's text puts the A 200 Turbo at 193 hp and the A 200 CDI at 140 hp while its table lists 190 hp and 138 hp, so no power is entered for those two.

When the A35 reached North America for 2020, the US only got the sedan. Canada and Mexico got both the hatchback and the sedan.

AMG calls the A45 S engine the second most powerful four-cylinder in series production, full stop.

The fourth-generation A-Class, sold in the U.S. starting with the 2019 model year, marked Mercedes-Benz's return of the A-Class nameplate to the American market after it had never been officially sold there before.

Mercedes squeezed so much out of the A45 AMG's little turbo four that, per litre, it matched the specific output of a Bugatti Chiron's W16.

The A 45 AMG squeezed as much power per litre out of its tiny four-cylinder as a Bugatti Chiron does from its quad-turbo W16 — a hot hatch matching hypercar efficiency.

The A 210 Evolution was only the second Mercedes ever to wear the 'Evolution' name — and just 2,629 were built, making the entry-level A-Class's flagship rarer than many actual supercars.

This A-Class flipped over during a Swedish magazine's moose-avoidance test — Mercedes denied it at first, then recalled every one of the 2,600 cars sold and halted sales for three months to fix it.

Japan was a minor market for the Swift: when it passed 2 million sales in 2011, about 39% were in India and 27% in Europe, against roughly 15% at home.

To adapt the Horizon for America, Chrysler bought nearly 100 Volkswagen Rabbits purely to reverse engineer them.

The Mk3 Focus RS's AWD system could send 100 percent of engine power to the rear wheels alone — built not in Ford's home country, but at the Saarlouis plant in Germany.

In June 2003, a Mégane II became the subject of the first ever live televised crash test with a real human driver at the wheel instead of a dummy — filmed by Top Gear.
