Mazda revived the Carol name in October 1989 for the Autozam Carol, built for Mazda by Suzuki on the Alto's platform mechanicals but with a largely unique interior and boldly curved exterior. Its round headlights and cute looks followed Nissan's Be-1 and Pao. New kei regulations replaced the 550 cc car within four months with the larger AA6 and its 657 cc F6A engine.

Mazda's eighth-generation Carol is a rebadged Suzuki Alto that differs from it only by its badge.

A lighter platform, body, engine and seats cut 60 kg from the car it replaced, for a claimed 37 km/L.

Wheelbase stretched to 2,400mm for this generation, purely to give rear passengers more legroom in a kei car.

Its downward-curving bonnet and headlamps drew comparisons with the Toyota WiLL Vi and the Citroën C2.

This Carol wore a Mazda badge but was basically a Suzuki Alto underneath.

The original Carol 360 was so over-engineered — monocoque body, four-wheel independent suspension, a five-bearing crank — that the extra cost and weight worked against it, and the comfy ride came with a cramped cabin.

Mazda gave the bigger-engined Carol 600 a four-door sedan body before the cheaper, smaller Carol 360 ever got one — the premium model leading for once.

It briefly served as senior sibling to Marquette, a GM companion brand cancelled after just one year.

Nissan hired former BMW engineers to help develop the 510's suspension, which is why period reviewers frequently compared its handling to the BMW 1600/2002.

A Trabant 601 won its class at the 1970 Monte Carlo Rally, with a second 601 right behind it in second.

The 600 was a stopgap: the P50's body over the 601's mechanicals, and for a while its estate was built alongside the new 601 saloon.

The G80 Sport brought a 370 PS twin-turbo 3.3 V6, a mesh grille and copper-tinted chrome with copper stitching to match.

The Vigor was sold only with a five-cylinder engine, an unusual configuration Honda used to fit a longer engine transversely under a short hood.

The GS/E coupe earned the nickname "German Charger" for its long hood, short deck stance borrowed from Detroit muscle cars.

This DeVille/Fleetwood was the first production car anywhere to mount its V8 sideways, Cadillac's front-drive gamble on the new C-body.
