The third generation Forward was launched in June 1985 with a cab design based on that of the 810; it was the first truck to win the Good Design Award. The FTR, FVR, FSR and FRR are all equipped with naturally aspirated and turbocharged 6BG1 and 6HE1 engines mated to a six-speed manual or the NAVi6 six-speed automatic with optional ABS. A 1992–1994 Isuzu Forward appears in a scene of Studio Ghibli's 1994 animated movie Pom Poko. The infobox lists the 6.5 L 6BG1 / 6BG1T inline-six; the page gives no power figures.

This Forward’s 6BB1 diesel packed the smallest displacement per cylinder of any direct-injection diesel engine in the world at the time, then went on to power Isuzu trucks for decades.

The diesel Isuzu bolted into the Forward truck in 1972 packed the smallest displacement per cylinder of any direct-injection diesel in the world at the time — and it went on powering Isuzu trucks for decades.

Isuzu widened the Forward's appeal mid-run: in August 1967 it added two lighter 3.5-tonne models, the TY31 and TY41, alongside the original heavier trucks.
