The first-generation Kona was revealed in June 2017 in Seoul and was the smallest crossover in Hyundai's global line-up until the Venue arrived in 2019. It sat on a B-segment SUV platform derived from the i30 and was built to take petrol, hybrid, diesel and electric powertrains. Front-wheel drive was standard, with all-wheel drive available; the all-wheel-drive cars used a multi-link rear suspension in place of a torsion beam. A facelift followed in September 2020, and the Kona Electric was offered with 39.2 or 64 kWh batteries.

Owning one
An estimate, for the 1.0 T-GDi trim: fuel on its EPA figure and a dated national price, upkeep on a per-mile average for the kind of car it is.

Hyundai designed this Kona as an EV first, then reverse-engineered gas and hybrid versions around it.

N Grin Shift briefly overboosts the engine past its normal rated output, a drag-strip cheat code Hyundai built in on purpose.

The Kona was named after the coffee-growing district on Hawaii's Big Island, continuing Hyundai's practice of naming SUVs after real places.
