The first Stepwgn, shown at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show as the F-MX and on sale in Japan from 8 May 1996. Where most Japanese minivans then had the engine mounted under the cabin, it used a more conventional two-box layout based on the Civic to reduce costs, with a sliding door on the passenger side. To improve profitability there was only one engine and transmission option: a two-litre inline-four and a 4-speed automatic. ABS and dual airbags became standard in 1997.
