The second-generation Civic Type R, introduced in 2001 as a unique three-door hatchback built at Swindon in England and offered in two forms. The European model had a 200 PS 2.0 L i-VTEC (K20A2) with seam welding, a close-ratio six-speed and upgraded brakes, but lacked the EK9's helical limited-slip differential and red Recaro seats. The Japanese-market version, also built in Swindon and shipped over, kept the helical LSD and Recaros, had more track-oriented chassis settings and a 215 PS K20A built in Japan (balanced crankshaft, different manifolds, high-lift cams and high-compression pistons), and was available in Championship White. A 2003 facelift brought quicker steering, revised suspension, projector headlamps and a lighter clutch and flywheel to address understeer, numb steering and low-end torque. Manufacturer claims: 0–60 mph in 5.8 s (Japan) and 6.5 s (Europe) pre-facelift, top speed 141 mph (JDM) and 146 mph (EDM). 25,798 were built (24,334 for Europe, 1,464 for Japan), including 300 30th Anniversary editions in 2003, the 2005 Premier Edition and 132 Vivid Blue Pearl cars.

We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

This Type R broke a two-decade streak — every Civic Type R since 2001 had been built in Swindon, England. The FL5 is built in Japan instead.

Honda deleted the rear wiper and heater ducts to shave 38 pounds off an already stripped Type R.

Honda claimed 5.7 seconds to 62mph for the FK8 Type R — Car and Driver's own stopwatch had it hitting 60 in just 4.9.

This British-built hot hatch had an American heart — every FK2 Type R's turbocharged engine was actually cast and built at Honda's Anna Engine Plant in Ohio before shipping to the UK.

Engineers moved the fuel tank under the driver's seat, since this British-built Type R shared no chassis with Japan's sedan version.

The EK9's B16B engine was hand-built and revved to 8,200 rpm, squeezing 182 hp from just 1.6 liters -- unheard of for a compact in 1997.

Renault moved the third Twingo's engine to the rear, which let the front wheels turn a startling 45° — an 8.6 m turning circle tighter than almost anything else on sale.

The new Twingo is a parts-bin special underneath: its front axle comes from the Renault 5 and 4, its rear axle from the Captur.
