FactHonda flew in Hollywood star Geena Davis to front the commercial for this Japan-only sedan — its 'Hard Top Innovation' slogan is literally where the Innova name came from.
Launched on 5 March 1992 on the CB Accord underpinnings with a new rounded "pillared hardtop" body styled like the Prelude BB4, keeping the Ascot's six-light greenhouse: Honda's answer to the Toyota Carina ED / Corona EXiV, Nissan Bluebird ARX and Mitsubishi Emeraude. It was the product of a joint effort with the Rover Group, which got the Rover 600 from it and Honda a European-built Accord (from Swindon), and was sold in Japan alongside, not instead of, the Ascot, as a Honda Primo exclusive. The slogan was "Hard Top Innovation", with Geena Davis in the ads. The 2.3 L H-series from the export Prelude made it wider and liable for a higher road-tax band; electronic four-wheel steering like the Prelude's and a self-locking LSD were available. Only the cheapest 2.0iC had a 5-speed manual; the rest had the 4-speed Prosmatic automatic. It ended in 1996, while the European Accord ran to 1998.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Unlike its Accord cousin and nearly every other front-drive Honda, this Ascot mounted its engine longitudinally, front-to-back, to balance weight between the axles instead of side-to-side.

The Ascot CB exists because of a sales-channel puzzle: Honda's Primo dealerships needed their own Accord-based sedan to sell.

It briefly served as senior sibling to Marquette, a GM companion brand cancelled after just one year.

Nissan hired former BMW engineers to help develop the 510's suspension, which is why period reviewers frequently compared its handling to the BMW 1600/2002.

A Trabant 601 won its class at the 1970 Monte Carlo Rally, with a second 601 right behind it in second.

The 600 was a stopgap: the P50's body over the 601's mechanicals, and for a while its estate was built alongside the new 601 saloon.

The G80 Sport brought a 370 PS twin-turbo 3.3 V6, a mesh grille and copper-tinted chrome with copper stitching to match.

The Vigor was sold only with a five-cylinder engine, an unusual configuration Honda used to fit a longer engine transversely under a short hood.

The GS/E coupe earned the nickname "German Charger" for its long hood, short deck stance borrowed from Detroit muscle cars.

This DeVille/Fleetwood was the first production car anywhere to mount its V8 sideways, Cadillac's front-drive gamble on the new C-body.
