FactThe Mark II facelift in 1986 gave this humble Ford a genuine luxury flex: optional anti-lock brakes and a heated windscreen, tech usually reserved for cars twice the price.
In March 1986 the Orion received the same facelift as the Escort: Ford regards it internally as an updated model ("Apollo-86") rather than a new generation, although it is popularly known as the Mark II. It brought the option of anti-lock brakes and a heated front windscreen, improved locks (Chubb AVA, soon the Tibbe type), new suspension and gearbox mounts, an updated interior, better soundproofing and revised steering and suspension settings. The base "L" gained an additional 1.3-litre engine option using the OHV "Valencia" engine as on the Escort, and a new 1.4-litre CVH lean-burn engine was introduced; this and the 1.6 CVH were lean-burn units and various models in the range could run on unleaded fuel without modification. Trim levels were L, Biscane (special edition) LX, Equipe (special edition) GL, GLS (special edition), Ghia, Ghia Injection and, from 1988, the 1600E special edition.
