FactA Fiat Nuova Campagnola was the Popemobile that carried John Paul II during the 1981 assassination attempt in St. Peter's Square. It's preserved today in the Vatican Museums.
The Campagnola was redesigned for launch in June 1974 and produced in this form until 1987 (sold in France as the Renault TRM500 with the Renault 20 engine, and the vehicle in which Pope John Paul II was shot in 1981 is a Campagnola in the Vatican carriage museum). The new vehicle used the petrol engine of the Fiat 132 but with a longer stroke that increased capacity to 1,995 cc; instead of the 132's twin overhead camshafts, the Campagnola engine had a single side-mounted camshaft driven by a toothed belt, with the valves driven by pushrods and rockers and a light-alloy cylinder head. As an option a Sofim 2.5-litre diesel was available. The large square engine compartment gave easy access and was designed to permit wading up to 70 cm deep; the 57-litre fuel tank was positioned out of range from rocks and flying stones, under the twin passenger seat beside the driver. Torsion bars suspended all four wheels, with two shock absorbers for each of the rear wheels and a single one for each of the front wheels, all six shocks interchangeable. UK road testers commended the ride over rough ground, which compared very favourably with that of the Land Rover of the time. A military version, the AR76, was introduced in 1976.

We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Fiat's military 4x4 almost launched as the "Alpina" — with WWII still fresh in memory, the name was dropped so it wouldn't evoke the Alpini army corps, and it became the Campagnola instead.

IIHS only crash-tests the driver's corner; tested on the passenger side instead, the CX-5 showed far worse intrusion.

Despite launching from a standing start in late 2025, the i60 topped GAC Aion's own sales chart through January's seasonal slowdown.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.

Subaru built a 2.5XT for the National Ski Patrol with a diamond-plate floor, a 9,500-pound winch and a toboggan on the roof.

Rear passengers get a 17.3-inch screen that extends from the roof, and a lidar sensor sits in the front of the roof.

Its range-extender variant is rated for 1,200 km on a tank and charge, over three times the car's electric-only range.
