FactDodge modernized the Ramcharger's V8s one at a time: throttle-body fuel injection hit the 318 in 1988, but the 360 had to wait until 1989.
The Ramcharger followed the D-series pickup's 1981 redesign into the Ram, considered the second generation (1981–1993, 1988–1996 in Mexico), with an egg crate-style grille used until 1986 (when the front was redesigned to the crosshair grille) and another grille change in 1991; these models had a non-removable welded steel top. From 1981 through 1987 all models were carbureted; in 1988 throttle-body fuel injection (TBI) was added to the 318 cu in (5.2 L) V8 (170 hp and 245 lb-ft) and in 1989 to the 360 cu in (5.9 L) V8 (193 hp and 285 lb-ft); in 1992 the multiport fuel-injected Magnum 318 was standard with the TBI LA 360 optional, and in 1993 the Magnum 360 replaced the LA engine. Manual transmissions ran from the A-230 three-speed to the A-535 five-speed in 1992 (the NP435 "granny gear" four-speed most common on 4WD models), and automatics were the TF-727 until the 1991 A-500/A-518 four-speed. Dimensions: 106.0 in wheelbase, 184.6 in long for 1988–90 and 188.0 in for 1991–93, 79.5 in wide, 69.7–74.1 in high. American production stopped after 1993; Mexican production continued until 1996.

Sold only in Mexico, this last-gasp Ramcharger packed an odd party trick: a small third-row jump seat in the cargo area that faced sideways instead of forward.

American production stopped in 1993, but Mexico kept selling it until 1996 with only minor running changes.

Before Dodge settled on "Ramcharger," this rugged SUV was developed under a very different codename: "Rhino."
