FactFirst-year Avalanches wore light grey plastic cladding for the sole purpose of looking less like the Suburban they were built alongside.
The Chevrolet Avalanche was launched in September 2001 as a 2002 model, a crew-cab pickup with a fold-down midgate on GM's GMT800 platform related to the Silverado and Suburban. First-year models had light grey plastic body cladding to set them apart from the Suburban. Engines were 5.3 litre V8s, including a flex-fuel version, and an 8.1 litre V8 in the 2500, with four-speed automatics.

A 2007 Avalanche went to Michael Young, named MVP of the 2006 MLB All-Star Game, as his prize.

The Avalanche's clever midgate — folding the cab into the bed — was good enough that GM copied it straight onto the GMC Envoy XUV and Hummer H2 SUT.
