FactThe 2000 tilux split the difference on purpose: the sportier TI's engine and chassis, wrapped in the plush 2000's styling, wood dashboard and optional leather seats.
The 2000 TI sedan, released in 1966, used the 90 kW (121 hp) engine from the 2000 CS with twin Solex PHH two-barrel side-draft carburetors and a higher compression ratio, plus front and rear anti-roll bars and somewhat wider wheel rims and tires than the 2000; it kept the round headlights and vertically arranged taillights of the 1800 and was otherwise less well equipped than its 2000 sibling (6,482 built, 1966–1968). Introduced soon after, the more luxurious 2000 tilux combined the TI's sportier engine and chassis with the 2000's exterior styling and a higher-grade interior and accessories, including a wood dashboard and optional leather seats (17,440 built, 1966–1971). A BMW 2000 TI won the 1966 Spa 24 Hours touring car race, and Hubert Hahne won the 1966 European Touring Car Challenge (Division 3) in one. The page gives the CS engine as 120 hp (89 kW) in its coupé section and 121 hp (90 kW) here; the sedan figure is used.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

BMW's entire modern reputation for fuel injection started here — the 2000 tii was the very first fuel-injected BMW ever built.

The 2000 tilux split the difference on purpose: the sportier TI's engine and chassis, wrapped in the plush 2000's styling, wood dashboard and optional leather seats.

BMW's 1800 TI performance upgrades weren't developed in-house — they came from outside tuner Alpina, years before Alpina became BMW's own factory performance arm.

Only 200 examples of this homologation-special 1800 TI/SA were built, sold exclusively to licensed racing and sports drivers - and one won the 1965 Spa 24 Hours.

The New Class sedans that saved BMW from near-bankruptcy hid an odd trick under the hood: the engine was tilted 30 degrees sideways just to get the low, sleek bonnet line the stylists wanted.

It briefly served as senior sibling to Marquette, a GM companion brand cancelled after just one year.

Nissan hired former BMW engineers to help develop the 510's suspension, which is why period reviewers frequently compared its handling to the BMW 1600/2002.

A Trabant 601 won its class at the 1970 Monte Carlo Rally, with a second 601 right behind it in second.

The 600 was a stopgap: the P50's body over the 601's mechanicals, and for a while its estate was built alongside the new 601 saloon.

The G80 Sport brought a 370 PS twin-turbo 3.3 V6, a mesh grille and copper-tinted chrome with copper stitching to match.

The Vigor was sold only with a five-cylinder engine, an unusual configuration Honda used to fit a longer engine transversely under a short hood.

The GS/E coupe earned the nickname "German Charger" for its long hood, short deck stance borrowed from Detroit muscle cars.

This DeVille/Fleetwood was the first production car anywhere to mount its V8 sideways, Cadillac's front-drive gamble on the new C-body.
