FactAlfa Romeo hadn't built a rear-wheel-drive car since the 75 was axed in 1992, until this one revived the layout.
Alfa Romeo's compact executive saloon, known internally as the Type 952. It was unveiled in June 2015 with market launch scheduled for February 2016, and is the first saloon Alfa Romeo offered after the 159 ended production in 2011. It is the first mass-market Alfa in over two decades on a longitudinal rear-wheel-drive platform, since the 75 was discontinued in 1992, using the new Giorgio platform that a team of ten under chief engineer Philippe Krief was given two and a half years to create. The base cars have four-cylinder petrol engines (the 2.0-litre GME MultiAir turbo, built at Termoli) or four-cylinder turbo diesels (the 2.2-litre Multijet II, built at Pratola Serra); the Quadrifoglio uses the 2.9-litre 690T twin-turbo V6 with a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic. The first models on sale in February 2016 were the 2.2 diesel and the Quadrifoglio. The "AE" Advanced Efficiency version, shown at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, paired a 180 PS diesel with the eight-speed automatic for 99 g/km of CO2 and was dropped from the 2019 model year. A limited run of 500 GTA and GTAm models was introduced on 2 March 2020, and the 2024 model year brought matrix LED headlights, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a mechanical limited-slip differential for the Quadrifoglio. It was second in the 2017 European Car of the Year voting, Motor Trend Car of the Year for 2018 and winner of the 2018 Compasso d'Oro. It is assembled at Cassino.

Alfa cut 100 kg off the Quadrifoglio's weight and widened its track by 50 mm to build 500 of these for an anniversary.

The Quadrifoglio didn't just look fast: with a manual gearbox, it lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:39 — a record for a saloon car.

Alfa built the Quadrifoglio's 2.9 V6 by cutting two cylinders off the Ferrari California T's twin-turbo V8.

It briefly served as senior sibling to Marquette, a GM companion brand cancelled after just one year.

Nissan hired former BMW engineers to help develop the 510's suspension, which is why period reviewers frequently compared its handling to the BMW 1600/2002.

A Trabant 601 won its class at the 1970 Monte Carlo Rally, with a second 601 right behind it in second.

The 600 was a stopgap: the P50's body over the 601's mechanicals, and for a while its estate was built alongside the new 601 saloon.

The G80 Sport brought a 370 PS twin-turbo 3.3 V6, a mesh grille and copper-tinted chrome with copper stitching to match.

The Vigor was sold only with a five-cylinder engine, an unusual configuration Honda used to fit a longer engine transversely under a short hood.

The GS/E coupe earned the nickname "German Charger" for its long hood, short deck stance borrowed from Detroit muscle cars.

This DeVille/Fleetwood was the first production car anywhere to mount its V8 sideways, Cadillac's front-drive gamble on the new C-body.
