The Toyota Fortuner (also the Hilux SW4 / SW4) is a mid-size body-on-frame SUV built on the Hilux pickup platform under Toyota's IMV project for emerging markets (with the Hilux and Innova), produced since November 2004. The first generation (AN50 for 4WD, AN60 for 2WD) was developed in Thailand by Thai and Japanese engineers and unveiled in December 2004 at the Thailand International Motor Expo, on sale in early 2005 below the Land Cruiser Prado and above the RAV4, with 2.7-litre 2TR-FE (also flex-fuel) and 4.0-litre 1GR-FE V6 petrol and 2.5-litre 2KD-FTV and 3.0-litre 1KD-FTV D-4D turbo diesel engines plus a 3.0 L 5L-E naturally aspirated diesel for governments and the UN, in 4×2 or 4×4 with a 5-speed manual or 4- or 5-speed automatic. The 2.5 2KD-FTV was upgraded to a variable nozzle turbo in August 2012 (about 11 seconds 0–100 km/h; under 10 s for the 3.0-litre) to commemorate Pertamina's Jakarta-to-Rome Fortuner expedition; the July 2008 facelift (projector headlamps, new grille and rear lights, Bluetooth) and the July 2011 facelift (a front like the J200 Land Cruiser) were designed in Australia by Toyota Australia.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

In Indonesia the GR Sport badge simply replaced an old one: the Fortuner TRD Sportivo was renamed GR Sport in August 2021.

Most three-row SUVs fold their back seats flat into the floor. The second-gen Fortuner's third row flips up onto the side walls instead, trading cargo space for a design most rivals abandoned.

IIHS only crash-tests the driver's corner; tested on the passenger side instead, the CX-5 showed far worse intrusion.

Despite launching from a standing start in late 2025, the i60 topped GAC Aion's own sales chart through January's seasonal slowdown.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.

Subaru built a 2.5XT for the National Ski Patrol with a diamond-plate floor, a 9,500-pound winch and a toboggan on the roof.

The L405 was the first Range Rover with a fully aluminum monocoque body, cutting up to 420 kg from the outgoing steel-bodied L322.

Rear passengers get a 17.3-inch screen that extends from the roof, and a lidar sensor sits in the front of the roof.

Its range-extender variant is rated for 1,200 km on a tank and charge, over three times the car's electric-only range.
