The second-generation Fortuner (AN150 for 4WD, AN160 for 2WD) was unveiled simultaneously on 16 July 2015 in Australia (the nameplate's debut there) and Thailand and shares the Hilux's chassis, transmission and engine lineup, with the "Keen Look" design language, a part-time 4×4 system instead of the previous full-time one, and two new GD-series common-rail diesels (2.4-litre 2GD-FTV and 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV, the latter with auto start-stop in some markets), with the 2.7 and 4.0-litre petrols updated with Dual VVT-i. It sits on double wishbone front and five-link rear suspension with coil springs and, from 2017, has disc brakes all round in all markets; the interior no longer shares the Hilux design, with an upright dashboard, synthetic leather with stitching and a colour TFT multi-info display, and every variant has ABS, EBD, dual and knee airbags, Eco and Power modes. The 1GD-FTV rose from 130 kW (174 hp) to 150 kW (201 hp) in 2020 with the facelift and 500 N·m of torque with the automatic. It was launched in Argentina as the SW4 on 21 December 2015 and in Australia in October 2015 only as a 4×4 2.8 turbo diesel.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.
