FactThe sixth-gen Wagon R's hybrid system can creep along on nothing but battery power — up to 10 seconds of electric-only driving, as long as you keep it under 13 km/h (8 mph).
The sixth-generation Wagon R, launched in Japan on 1 February 2017 on the HEARTECT platform, has an upgraded integrated starter generator and a larger hybrid battery, which can drive the car on battery power alone for up to 10 seconds while the speed stays under 13 km/h. A five-speed manual dropped out of the range, then returned in August 2017 on the FA model only. It came as the regular Wagon R (a square, friendly theme), the sporty-looking Hybrid FZ with two-tiered headlamps and grille, and the more aggressive turbocharged Stingray with trapezoidal headlamps. The Smile derivative was created on 27 August 2021; the regular model was facelifted on 2 August 2022 with the Custom Z (naturally aspirated or turbocharged) replacing the Hybrid FZ, and a significant facelift in December 2025 consolidated the line-up into a single Custom Z-based model, discontinuing the turbocharged engine, with Hybrid ZX and ZL trims. Mazda sells it as the Flair.

This kei-class Wagon R squeezed a mild-hybrid system into a tiny car and still hit 28.8 km/L on Japan's test cycle — nearly 68 mpg from a car the size of a phone booth.

This Wagon R redesigned its rear doors specifically to kill off the D-pillar — bigger doors with built-in quarter glass solved what earlier generations needed a whole extra pillar for.

The turbocharged Stingray version of this generation sprinted 0–100 km/h in about 15 seconds — quick work out of a 660cc kei car.

This generation's wider Wagon R-Wide crossed into Europe wearing a different badge — it's sold there as the Opel/Vauxhall Agila.

This tiny tall-wagon kei car pulled off the unthinkable: it occasionally outsold the Toyota Corolla in Japan, moving 900,000 units and catching Suzuki completely by surprise.

Japan was a minor market for the Swift: when it passed 2 million sales in 2011, about 39% were in India and 27% in Europe, against roughly 15% at home.

To adapt the Horizon for America, Chrysler bought nearly 100 Volkswagen Rabbits purely to reverse engineer them.

The Mk3 Focus RS's AWD system could send 100 percent of engine power to the rear wheels alone — built not in Ford's home country, but at the Saarlouis plant in Germany.

In June 2003, a Mégane II became the subject of the first ever live televised crash test with a real human driver at the wheel instead of a dummy — filmed by Top Gear.
