FactThis tiny tall-wagon kei car pulled off the unthinkable: it occasionally outsold the Toyota Corolla in Japan, moving 900,000 units and catching Suzuki completely by surprise.
The original tall-wagon kei car, introduced at the 1993 Tokyo Motor Show 255 mm taller than the Alto it shared its length, width and 660 cc F6A three-cylinder engines with, developed with low-cost manufacturing in mind and 70 percent parts commonality with the Alto. It began with two doors on the left and one on the right; a symmetrical five-door setup arrived in August 1996. It won Japan's Car of the Year award for model year 1994, and 900,000 first-generation cars sold at home, at times outselling the Toyota Corolla. Also sold as the Autozam / Mazda AZ Wagon.
