The fifth-generation Wagon R was launched in Japan in September 2012 with an optional mild-hybrid system marketed as "ENE-CHARGE" and an energy-saving electric air conditioning system marketed as "ECO-COOL". Combining the R06A engine with an electric motor/generator and a lithium-ion battery, ENE-CHARGE provides regenerative braking and power assist and can run certain electrical equipment, enabling up to 28.8 km/L in Japan's JC08 cycle. It was facelifted in August 2014 with a larger black plastic grille with a chrome surround, redesigned bumpers and a low-cost FA model added to the range; Mazda sold it as the Flair, with the Stingray rebadged as the Flair Custom Style, both launched in October 2012.
