The first-generation SsangYong Rexton (Y200, also the Daewoo Rexton), a mid-size SUV styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign and related to the Mercedes-Benz M-Class (W163), was manufactured from late 2001 (the infobox gives 2001–2017; the text says the Y200 series ran from 2001 to 2006). It was available only with four-wheel drive and one of four engines: a 2.3-litre 112 kW (150 hp) petrol, a 2.7-litre 121 kW (162 hp) and 342 N·m (252 lb·ft) common-rail diesel (based on the Mercedes OM612 CDI, re-engineered by SsangYong), a 2.9-litre diesel and a 3.2-litre 162 kW (217 hp) and 310 N·m (229 lb·ft) petrol. The Daewoo-badged version was sold in certain European markets such as France until early 2003, and in June 2003 the Rexton was introduced in Europe under the SsangYong badge on a slightly extended Musso chassis with the 2.9 five-cylinder diesel (five-speed Tremec manual or four-speed BTR automatic) and the 3.2 six-cylinder petrol, adding the 2.7 XDi with a five-speed Tiptronic in 2004. The R-Line had a stronger 186 PS (402 N·m) 2.7 diesel. The page gives no per-engine years, so the trims carry the generation span.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

SsangYong says the boxy Rexton Y400's design was actually inspired by the Parthenon — ancient Greek architecture informing a modern SUV's sheet metal.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.
