Introduced in March 2004 on the Volkswagen Group A5 (PQ35) platform shared with the Audi A3 Mk2, Golf Mk5, Jetta Mk5 and SEAT León Mk2, designed by Thomas Ingenlath and Peter Wouda, with more rear-seat legroom (a weak point of the first car) and an all-new engine range shared with the group. Liftback and Combi estate bodies, with the Scout 4x4 and the RS. A facelifted version launched in 2009 after being formally unveiled at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, with revised headlights and bumpers, a first 1.4 TSI, 1.8 TSI and seven-speed direct-shift gearbox. In the UK the Classic, Ambiente, Elegance, Laurin & Klement, 4x4 and vRS trims were renamed Active and Ambition from September 2011. It was sold as the Škoda Laura in India and the Octavia Mingrui in China.

This Octavia generation was the first Škoda ever fitted with a head-up display — alongside twin 10-inch screens, wireless charging and a joystick replacing the automatic's gear lever.

Its Chinese sibling, the Octavia Pro, is 64 mm longer than the European car, built purely to fatten rear legroom for the market that buys it.

This Octavia RS fakes its own engine note: a 'Performance Sound Generator' vibrates the windshield itself to pipe a sportier exhaust sound into the cabin.

This Octavia grew longer, wider and roomier than the car it replaced — yet somehow came in up to 102 kg lighter.

A modified Octavia RS once set a genuine world record: fastest 2.0-litre car on Earth, hitting 227mph at the Bonneville Speedway.
