Typ 1P, designed by Walter de Silva on the Volkswagen Group A5 (PQ35) platform shared with the Audi A3 Mk2, Golf Mk5 and Mk6, Jetta Mk5, Škoda Octavia Mk2 and the SEAT Altea and Toledo Mk3; production began in 2005 (May/July). It brought Alfa Romeo-like design cues and vertically parked wipers, with the new 1.2 TSI (105 PS) at the bottom of the range and the FR variants above, starting with the 150 PS 2.0 FSI and the 140 PS 2.0 TDI. A 185 PS 2.0 TFSI was dropped after poor sales, and the June 2006 FR took the 200 PS 2.0 TFSI from the Golf Mk5 GTI. The 240 PS Cupra did 0–100 km/h in 6.4 seconds and the Cupra R (265 PS, the Audi S3 and Golf R engine) in 6.2 seconds, limited to 250 km/h. A 2009 facelift followed, along with limited editions: the 55-unit Copa Edition (285 PS), Streetcopa and World Champion Edition (200 each for Switzerland), the 2008 UK-only K1 Cupra, the 100-unit Dutch Cupra 310 Limited Edition (310 PS, 425 N·m) and a one-off Cupra customised by Shakira for the Pies Descalzos Foundation. The 170 PS 2.0 TDI FR was Scotland's Diesel Car of the Year in 2006.

SEAT built the 204 PS eHybrid Leon with no Cupra badge, the most power the brand ever sold without one.

The Cupra 280's Ultimate Sub8 pack saved weight by swapping climate control for a smaller heater and cutting the speakers from eight to four.

The Mk3 León is shorter and up to 90 kg lighter than the car it replaced — yet a longer wheelbase actually gave it more rear legroom and cargo space.

The León Cupra R of this generation shared its 265 PS engine with the Audi S3 and the Golf and Scirocco R.

In 2007 SEAT built exactly one Shakira-customized León — mechanically a Cupra underneath — and auctioned it for charity.

The original León Cupra only came in red, yellow and black — the colours of Spain and Germany's flags, a paint-level tribute to the two countries behind the car.

The VR6 Cupra 4 borrowed its 2.8 V6 and 4WD system from the Golf R32's engine bay layout.

Japan was a minor market for the Swift: when it passed 2 million sales in 2011, about 39% were in India and 27% in Europe, against roughly 15% at home.

To adapt the Horizon for America, Chrysler bought nearly 100 Volkswagen Rabbits purely to reverse engineer them.

The Mk3 Focus RS's AWD system could send 100 percent of engine power to the rear wheels alone — built not in Ford's home country, but at the Saarlouis plant in Germany.

In June 2003, a Mégane II became the subject of the first ever live televised crash test with a real human driver at the wheel instead of a dummy — filmed by Top Gear.

This Wagon R redesigned its rear doors specifically to kill off the D-pillar — bigger doors with built-in quarter glass solved what earlier generations needed a whole extra pillar for.

The BX was the UK's best-selling diesel car for four years from 1987, and 2,315,739 were built in all.

Six months before Suzuki retired the Fronte name for good, the CN11S's 796cc version was already being built in China under a completely different name: the Anchi 6330.

Built to use up Chrysler-Simca's parts bin, it took its engine and gearbox straight from the front-wheel-drive Simca 1100 but mounted them amidships instead.
