FactThe original León Cupra only came in red, yellow and black — the colours of Spain and Germany's flags, a paint-level tribute to the two countries behind the car.
The first León (Typ 1M) launched in 1999 and was built at Martorell (13,401 cars in Belgium), designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign on the Volkswagen Group A4 (PQ34) platform shared with the Audi A3 Mk1, Golf Mk4 and Škoda Octavia Mk1. It was marketed as a sportier, cheaper alternative to the Golf, with a fastback design inspired by the Alfa Romeo Alfasud, firmer suspension and wider tyres, the dashboard of the first Audi A3 and the SEAT Toledo as its saloon sibling. The "León 20VT" with the 1.8-litre turbo (called Cupra, then FR in the UK) had 180 PS; the Cupra R had 210 PS and later 225 PS, and the Cupra 4 of 2000–2004 had a 204 PS 2.8 VR6 with four-wheel drive through the Haldex system used in the Golf 4motion. A 150 PS Cupra 4 TDI (later 2WD) topped the diesels. The original Cupra came only in red, yellow and black, the colours of the Spanish and German flags, as a homage to the two countries' collaboration on the car; Abt made a supercharged "Cupra 4 Kompressor" with 280 PS for Switzerland. Production ended in May 2006, and Autocar readers voted the Cupra R seventh in a 2010 "best hot hatchback of all time" poll.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

SEAT built the 204 PS eHybrid Leon with no Cupra badge, the most power the brand ever sold without one.

The Cupra 280's Ultimate Sub8 pack saved weight by swapping climate control for a smaller heater and cutting the speakers from eight to four.

The Mk3 León is shorter and up to 90 kg lighter than the car it replaced — yet a longer wheelbase actually gave it more rear legroom and cargo space.

The León Cupra R of this generation shared its 265 PS engine with the Audi S3 and the Golf and Scirocco R.

In 2007 SEAT built exactly one Shakira-customized León — mechanically a Cupra underneath — and auctioned it for charity.

The original León Cupra only came in red, yellow and black — the colours of Spain and Germany's flags, a paint-level tribute to the two countries behind the car.

The VR6 Cupra 4 borrowed its 2.8 V6 and 4WD system from the Golf R32's engine bay layout.

To adapt the Horizon for America, Chrysler bought nearly 100 Volkswagen Rabbits purely to reverse engineer them.

The Mk3 Focus RS's AWD system could send 100 percent of engine power to the rear wheels alone — built not in Ford's home country, but at the Saarlouis plant in Germany.

In June 2003, a Mégane II became the subject of the first ever live televised crash test with a real human driver at the wheel instead of a dummy — filmed by Top Gear.

This Wagon R redesigned its rear doors specifically to kill off the D-pillar — bigger doors with built-in quarter glass solved what earlier generations needed a whole extra pillar for.

The BX was the UK's best-selling diesel car for four years from 1987, and 2,315,739 were built in all.

Built to use up Chrysler-Simca's parts bin, it took its engine and gearbox straight from the front-wheel-drive Simca 1100 but mounted them amidships instead.
