FactPeugeot's 604 D Turbo arrived in 1979 as Europe's first production turbodiesel car; some owners parked it on hills just to restart it.
The 604 was Peugeot's executive saloon from 1975 to 1985, its first car in that class since the 1930s. Designed at Pininfarina and unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1975, it was based on the principles of the 504, using its bulkhead, doors and part of its floorpan, and was usually powered by the new PRV V6 developed with Renault and Volvo. A turbodiesel followed in 1979, and Kia assembled it in South Korea from 1979 to 1981. 153,252 were sold.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Right up to the end, Peugeot kept upgrading the 604 — in its very last full year, 1984, it swapped in a bigger 2.8-litre GTi engine to replace the old 2.7-litre STi, barely a year before the whole model was axed.
