FactNissan quietly leased out a hydrogen fuel-cell version of this X-Trail to businesses, unveiling it at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003 — two decades before fuel-cell SUVs became a talking point again.
The T30 series X-Trail was unveiled at the September 2000 Paris Motor Show, using the Nissan MS platform shared with the Almera and the Primera. It entered production in October 2000, with sales in Japan starting in November, and in the United Kingdom and Australia it was launched in October 2001. In June 2003 Nissan gave the car an interior and exterior facelift and upgraded the 2.2-litre turbo-diesels with a variable turbocharger, the 2.2 DCi replacing the earlier 2.2 Di, producing 136 PS instead of 114 PS. The X-Trail's All-Mode 4x4 transfer case lets the driver select 2WD, 4WD or 4WD Lock from a dashboard switch. In February 2001 Nissan launched the X-Trail GT, offered only in Japan with the SR20VET turbocharged petrol engine, four-wheel drive and a four-speed automatic; it was the first SR20 Nissan ever produced pairing the VE head with a turbo in a transverse, all-wheel-drive layout. Nissan also leased a hydrogen fuel cell X-Trail FCV to businesses, unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2003. Production continued in several other countries well beyond the Japanese run.

Nissan's new X-Trail got taller and wider for 2021 — but somehow ended up 10mm shorter than the model it replaced, with the wheelbase untouched.

This generation dropped the boxy SUV shape entirely for a softer, urban-crossover look borrowed straight from the Hi-Cross concept car.

Behind the scenes, this X-Trail's diesel wasn't a purely Nissan design — the 2.0-litre engine in Japan's 20GT model was developed jointly with alliance partner Renault.

IIHS only crash-tests the driver's corner; tested on the passenger side instead, the CX-5 showed far worse intrusion.

Despite launching from a standing start in late 2025, the i60 topped GAC Aion's own sales chart through January's seasonal slowdown.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.

Subaru built a 2.5XT for the National Ski Patrol with a diamond-plate floor, a 9,500-pound winch and a toboggan on the roof.

The L405 was the first Range Rover with a fully aluminum monocoque body, cutting up to 420 kg from the outgoing steel-bodied L322.
