After poor sales of the Almera Tino, which sold 200,000 cars in seven years against 1,400,000 for its main rival the Renault Scénic, Nissan began development of what would become the Note in summer 2002. The Nissan Tone concept was unveiled at the 2004 Paris Motor Show, and Nissan's product manager said the Note was meant to be sold for under 13,000 euros. Production began in December 2004 at Oppama, Japan, and at Sunderland in the United Kingdom, on the Nissan B platform related to the Nissan Livina, AD/Wingroad and Tiida/Latio/Versa. The European model was unveiled at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, and the European second facelift models went on sale in late 2010 as 2011 model year vehicles with a choice of a 1.5-litre dCi turbo diesel, a 1.4-litre petrol and a 1.6-litre petrol.

The E13 Note actually shrank versus its predecessor — 55mm shorter overall — yet Nissan still made the body 30% stiffer using ultra-high-tensile steel.

The E12 Note's tiny 1.2-litre DIG-S engine used a supercharger to match the performance of a 1.5-litre — reportedly Nissan's first-ever supercharged production model.
