FactBefore it ever reached a customer, Nio drove the ES8 across Inner Mongolia and Australia chasing temperature extremes.
The Nio ES8, unveiled December 2017 and in production from June 2018 for the Chinese market (Norway from 30 September 2021), was Nio's first production car, a 6- or 7-seat full-size luxury SUV built almost entirely (96.4%) of aluminium with active air suspension. Nio tested it across Inner Mongolia and Australia for temperature extremes. It launched with a 70 or 84 kWh swappable lithium-ion battery (100 kWh from 2019); a March 2020 facelift combined a 160 kW (218 PS) permanent-magnet front motor with a 240 kW (326 PS) induction rear motor for 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and up to 580 km NEDC range. Dual-motor all-wheel drive; wheelbase 3,010 mm (118.5 in), length 5,022 mm (197.7 in), width 1,962 mm (77.2 in), height 1,756 mm (69.1 in), curb weight 2,460 kg (5,423 lb).

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Nio sold out 2025 production within two days of launch, with about 100,000 cancellable pre-orders stacked on top.

Nio offered a rental-only 150 kWh semi-solid-state battery pack for the ES8, too costly to just sell outright.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.
