The first-generation Niro was introduced in 2016 on the same Eco-Car platform as the Hyundai Ioniq, with a dual-clutch gearbox chosen over the CVT most hybrids use. Full production began in May 2016 at Hwaseong, South Korea. A plug-in hybrid followed at the end of 2017 and a battery electric version, the Niro EV or e-Niro, in 2018 with 39.2 or 64 kWh batteries; no production version was offered with four-wheel drive. It was facelifted in 2019.
