FactThis Ballade wasn't just a Civic with a different face — its shared body panels also became the basis for the CR-X sports car and, an ocean away, the Rover 200.
The second-generation Ballade shared most of its body panels with the Civic apart from a sportier front end, and formed the basis of the CR-X sports car and the Rover 200; from 1983 it adopted partially concealed headlights, shared with the Vigor, Quint Integra, Ballade Sports CR-X and Prelude. The top EX-i had a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated 12-valve all-aluminium engine with PGM-FI multi-point fuel injection developing 100 bhp (75 kW), the same engine as the CR-X, plus electric windows all round, heated electric mirrors, metallic paint, vented front discs and power steering; lower-specification models had the same 1.5 with a carburettor and 85 bhp (63 kW), and the 1.3-litre EV and 1.5-litre EW engines paired with a 3-speed automatic or 4/5-speed manual. The Ballade in Japan was replaced in September 1987 by the Concerto 5-door hatchback and sedan as the luxury Civic at the newly established Honda Clio dealerships (later the Domani), and the sport-oriented version of the Civic it loosely held evolved into the Integra in 1985.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

This Ballade wasn't just a Civic with a different face — its shared body panels also became the basis for the CR-X sports car and, an ocean away, the Rover 200.

This first-generation Ballade kicked off a huge alliance: nine months after Honda struck a deal with British Leyland, the same car launched in Britain as the Triumph Acclaim — the start of the Honda-Rover partnership.

It briefly served as senior sibling to Marquette, a GM companion brand cancelled after just one year.

Nissan hired former BMW engineers to help develop the 510's suspension, which is why period reviewers frequently compared its handling to the BMW 1600/2002.

A Trabant 601 won its class at the 1970 Monte Carlo Rally, with a second 601 right behind it in second.

The 600 was a stopgap: the P50's body over the 601's mechanicals, and for a while its estate was built alongside the new 601 saloon.

The G80 Sport brought a 370 PS twin-turbo 3.3 V6, a mesh grille and copper-tinted chrome with copper stitching to match.

The Vigor was sold only with a five-cylinder engine, an unusual configuration Honda used to fit a longer engine transversely under a short hood.

The GS/E coupe earned the nickname "German Charger" for its long hood, short deck stance borrowed from Detroit muscle cars.

This DeVille/Fleetwood was the first production car anywhere to mount its V8 sideways, Cadillac's front-drive gamble on the new C-body.
