The second-generation Ford Kuga was primarily developed by Ford of Europe under the "One Ford" policy, which stipulates that Ford designs only one model in each segment to be sold globally, with the rebadged Ford Escape name used in North America, replacing the model of the same name there. It was built in Valencia, Spain, and in Chongqing, China, Russia and, as the Escape, Louisville, Kentucky, on the Ford C1 platform related to the third-generation Focus, the second-generation C-Max and the Lincoln MKC. Ford Europe debuted the facelifted model at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February 2016. From 2015 numerous South African Kugas with the 1.6-litre EcoBoost caught fire, and in January 2017 a safety recall was announced for 4,556 1.6-litre EcoBoost models built between December 2012 and February 2014.

We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.
