The first-generation Ford Kuga went on sale in the first half of 2008 and was built at Ford's plant in Saarlouis, Germany, on the Ford C1 platform shared with the second-generation Ford Focus and the Focus C-Max. In the United Kingdom, emphasising the car's premium aspirations, only the high-end Zetec and Titanium specifications were offered. A 2007 report indicated Ford executives were considering sales in North America, an idea later scrapped and then reconsidered, and on 23 June 2010 Ford announced it would end production of the second-generation Escape in 2011 in anticipation of the Kuga's North American launch. It offered a 2.5-litre Duratec five-cylinder turbo petrol engine and a 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel, with 6-speed manual, 5-speed automatic and 6-speed PowerShift transmissions.
