The 1979 Newport was downsized onto the Chrysler R platform, a derivative of the circa-1962 B platform, offered only as a pillared-hardtop four-door sedan and built at Lynch Road, Detroit, and for 1979 in Windsor. Rather than designing a smaller body, Chrysler lightened the existing platform for fuel efficiency. Engines were the 3.7 litre Slant Six and 5.2 and 5.9 litre LA V8s; it ended after 1981.

The Vigor was sold only with a five-cylinder engine, an unusual configuration Honda used to fit a longer engine transversely under a short hood.
