The all-new Escalade's launch turned into a pileup of its own making: dealers waited a month or more for cars stuck in an extended quality check, with some February orders still unfilled by August.

This generation's launch got a Super Bowl spotlight: the 2007 Escalade was the Super Bowl XL official vehicle, and MVP Hines Ward drove home with one of the very first units built.

Cadillac was in no hurry to update the Escalade — while its Chevy and GMC siblings moved to the new full-size truck platform for 2000, the Escalade waited over a year, becoming the last of GM's three brands to switch.

The very first Escalade wasn’t really a Cadillac at all under the skin — rushed out to answer the Lincoln Navigator, it was essentially a badge-engineered GMC Yukon Denali.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.

Subaru built a 2.5XT for the National Ski Patrol with a diamond-plate floor, a 9,500-pound winch and a toboggan on the roof.
