FactThe Sealion 05 DM-i's styling was originally meant for the Frigate 05, a BYD sedan cancelled back in 2022.
The first-generation BYD Sealion 05 DM-i, code SL2H, is a plug-in hybrid compact SUV built in Xi'an from September 2024 to 2025 and sold through BYD's Ocean Network in China. It is a sister model of the Song Pro, sharing its price and technical specifications, with styling borrowed from the Destroyer 05 sedan. It uses the DM-i 5.0 system with a 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle engine, an E-CVT and front-wheel drive, with a 12.9 or 18.3 kWh Blade battery. A second generation using the Sealion 05 EV's body went on sale on 20 April 2026.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.
