FactWhen the last 1000 Sp cabriolet rolled off the line in 1965, Auto Union's successors didn't build another open-top car for nearly 30 years — not until the Audi 80 Cabriolet in 1994.
Appearing in 1958, the Auto Union 1000 Sp was a low-slung two-seater sports car produced for Auto Union by the Stuttgart coach builders Baur (ca. 6,640 built 1959–1965); a fixed-head version was joined in 1961 by a cabriolet. Its stylish tail-finned look gave rise to the "baby Thunderbird" (schmalspur Thunderbird) soubriquet, though under the skin it was merely an Auto Union 1000 with an increased compression ratio and a claimed maximum of 55 PS (40 kW; 54 hp); it was lower but not significantly lighter than the standard saloon, with a claimed maximum speed of 140 km/h (87 mph) putting its performance at the top of the range, and it was the last open-top car produced by the company until the Audi 80 cabriolet in 1994. In Argentina the Fissore-designed Coupé and Spyder "1000 SE" were based on it.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Auto Union's 1961 "Lubrimat" oil injection system was meant to stop the 1000's two-stroke engine smoking blue — instead, the brutal winter of 1962-63 thickened the oil until it couldn't flow through the feeder pipe, and crankshafts started failing.

It briefly served as senior sibling to Marquette, a GM companion brand cancelled after just one year.

Nissan hired former BMW engineers to help develop the 510's suspension, which is why period reviewers frequently compared its handling to the BMW 1600/2002.

A Trabant 601 won its class at the 1970 Monte Carlo Rally, with a second 601 right behind it in second.

The 600 was a stopgap: the P50's body over the 601's mechanicals, and for a while its estate was built alongside the new 601 saloon.

The G80 Sport brought a 370 PS twin-turbo 3.3 V6, a mesh grille and copper-tinted chrome with copper stitching to match.

The Vigor was sold only with a five-cylinder engine, an unusual configuration Honda used to fit a longer engine transversely under a short hood.

The GS/E coupe earned the nickname "German Charger" for its long hood, short deck stance borrowed from Detroit muscle cars.

This DeVille/Fleetwood was the first production car anywhere to mount its V8 sideways, Cadillac's front-drive gamble on the new C-body.
