In May 1956, for a brief period only, a derivative of the A90 Six Westminster was announced, a short-boot version of the A105 with the twin SU carburettor, 102 hp version of the 2.6-litre C-Series engine with overdrive as standard. In October 1956 the A105 received the longer wheelbase with overdrive as standard and automatic transmission as an option, with twin fog lights, heater and wheel trims standard, and two-tone paint and white-wall tyres introduced for visual effect; very few short-boot A105s were produced. The A90 was updated for autumn 1956 as the A95, with more power, a longer body and an estate model, and overdrive and an automatic transmission were new too, something of a novelty in British cars of the time. Both were produced together until 1959, with 28,065 A95s and 6,770 A105s built.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

This Westminster's body did double duty: the same shell underpinned a Rolls-Royce-engined Vanden Plas Princess, and even shaped a prototype Bentley.

The A99 Westminster's handsome Pininfarina body has a secret twin — the same design lineage, by way of the Lancia Flaminia, also gave the world the Peugeot 404's shape.

"A90" wasn't a new badge — Austin had already worn it out on the unrelated 1948-52 Atlantic before handing it to this Westminster.

It briefly served as senior sibling to Marquette, a GM companion brand cancelled after just one year.

Nissan hired former BMW engineers to help develop the 510's suspension, which is why period reviewers frequently compared its handling to the BMW 1600/2002.

A Trabant 601 won its class at the 1970 Monte Carlo Rally, with a second 601 right behind it in second.

The 600 was a stopgap: the P50's body over the 601's mechanicals, and for a while its estate was built alongside the new 601 saloon.

The G80 Sport brought a 370 PS twin-turbo 3.3 V6, a mesh grille and copper-tinted chrome with copper stitching to match.

The Vigor was sold only with a five-cylinder engine, an unusual configuration Honda used to fit a longer engine transversely under a short hood.

The GS/E coupe earned the nickname "German Charger" for its long hood, short deck stance borrowed from Detroit muscle cars.

This DeVille/Fleetwood was the first production car anywhere to mount its V8 sideways, Cadillac's front-drive gamble on the new C-body.
